Being creative and having the balls to do what you want to do and not giving a shit what other people think is probably one of the biggest keys to truly enjoying life. Such is the case with DJ M!X from Denmark who has created a YouTube page of himself rocking some hot mixes while wearing a customized Saw mask. He isn’t the first DJ to dawn a funky mask and DJ but he definitely stands out as a creative individual; even you have to admit this is one awesome photo of him in the elements.

Picking out the best DJ Controller of 2011 wasn’t easy. It came down to which DJ Controller allowed one to be the most creative and had the best hardware layout for easy functionality. At the end the Pioneer DDJ-ERGO-V came out ahead of the pack. Its revolutionary design and compact size set a new high standard for DJ Controllers. Even though it did win we have to warn that the Ergo is probably a firmware update away of being totally stable. But the foundation of this unit and Pioneer DJ’s reputation of excellence make this a DJ Controller to behold.

Many think we came up with the name imixmag because of Apple’s imac or ipod line. Well, we actually came up with the imix name around 1994 and came out with our first real paper magazine in 1995; the first imac wasn’t introduced until 1998, that’s around three years before we started things up.

You’re at a gig and your mixing or scratching things up and you want to throw on an air siren you have set on one of your samples in your DJ software. The lights are low and hitting the correct key combination on your laptop can be a pain in the arse and using the touchpad to to hit the sample is really a joke. Here’s a great inexpensive solution for you, the Akai LPD8.

The LPD8 has 8 pads which feel just like the MPC pads. A cool feature for such a small and inexpensive device is that the rim of the pad lights up in orange when hit. The 8 assignable Q-link knobs can be easily assigned to control the knob functions on your software and being plug and play ready for both Apple & Windows makes this usb powered midi controller easy to install.

As far as build quality is concerned Akai took no shortcut. Its construction is strong and of high quality. It only measures 13” across which will take little to no space when you’re on the road. Since most use a laptop stand placing it in front of the laptop may not be an option however placing it in front of your flight case on the table would give you easy access to your samples, creating loops on the fly, and many other option which would not be as easy and quick to do with the keyboard and touchpad. At a street price of around $69 the LPD8 is one of the best bargains for your DJ set up.

It seems our recent award to DJ M!X for most creative YouTube DJ of 2011 got the creative juices of others going. DJ FlacKstar contacted us and asked us to look at his Youtube video. To be honest the first video he posted needed some more creative improvements. We suggested a few changes and within a couple of days he posted another video. We were happy to see he took our advice and made the video more creative. Our challenge to him and to all DJs is to be as creative as you can. Try to imagine it and most importantly Make it Happen.

Forget about 2011, the American DJ Micro Galaxian is probably the best bang for your dollar DJ light within the last ten years; if not ever. Its compact size and wow factor make this the best DJ light for mobile DJs and small to medium size venues. And at a price of $99 you should be ashamed if you don’t already have one.
